Every September we get the same call. Somebody bought a Solo Stove at the end of summer, the evenings finally cooled off, and now they are standing on a two year old Trex deck wondering whether lighting it is going to cost them a board.
The short answer is yes, with real conditions attached. The longer answer is that the conditions most people worry about are not the ones that actually matter, and there is a Naperville rule on this that almost nobody knows about until a fire truck shows up in the cul de sac.
Let us do the fire department part first, because it changes the whole conversation.
What Naperville actually says about fires near a structure
Recreational fires do not need a permit here. The city’s open burning page is clear that fires for cooking and fires in commercially built outdoor fireplaces are not considered open burning, and that they do not require an Open Burn Permit. Fuel is limited to charcoal and clean dry wood. No garbage, no yard waste, no treated lumber.
So far, so good. Then there is the clearance rule, and this is the part that catches people.
Under the city’s published open burning regulations, a bonfire, campfire, recreational fire, or cooking fire on private land has to be at least 50 feet from any structure. There is a reduced allowance for contained fires, worded as follows: “Fires in approved containers shall be permitted within 15 feet of any structure.” Read alongside the 50 foot baseline and alongside how neighboring towns like Schaumburg write the same rule, the working interpretation is that an approved container buys you a reduced clearance of 15 feet rather than 50.
Now look at where your fire pit is sitting. A deck attached to your house is a structure. It is also touching a second structure, which is your house. A Solo Stove in the middle of an attached deck is not 15 feet from anything. It is zero feet from two things.
We are contractors, not the fire marshal, and we are not going to tell you how Naperville will read that in your specific backyard. What we will tell you is to call the Community Risk Reduction Division at (630) 420-6146 and ask before you make it a weekly habit, and to read the city’s open burning page yourself. Ordinances get amended. Ours is the version we read while writing this.
One more thing from that same page worth knowing: Naperville has a dense smoke nuisance provision, and the fire department responds to open burning complaints. If your fire annoys a neighbor in Ashbury or Tall Grass, somebody can call, and NFD will come look. Repeat visits get referred to the Fire Prevention Bureau. Wet wood and a smoky fire are how a fine evening turns into a conversation you did not want.
What heat actually does to a composite board
Set the code aside for a moment. Here is the material science, which is simpler than people expect.
Trex publishes that its material can soften at temperatures as low as 176 degrees Fahrenheit. That is not a burning temperature. That is a softening temperature, and it is low. Water boils at 212. A dark composite board in full August sun in Naperville can get uncomfortably close to that on its own.
A wood fire burns several hundred degrees hotter than that at the base, and radiant heat off the underside of a fire pit does not care that the flame is contained. The failure mode on composite is usually not a fire. It is a permanent dish shaped depression, a glossy scorch, or a warped board that no longer sits flat against its neighbors.
Trex’s own position is that wood burning fire pits should not be placed directly on their decking unless a heat barrier is used, and they specifically name DeckProtect as a product tested against their boards. For gas fire features, Trex’s guidance is that these are normally installed by cutting the decking around the unit rather than setting it on top, with fire resistant material underneath. Propane tables they consider generally fine, because those do not throw heat downward.
TimberTech and the other composite manufacturers take a similar line. And all of them exclude heat damage from the warranty, which brings up the expensive part.
The repair nobody thinks about until they need it
A melted board in the middle of a deck field is genuinely annoying to fix, and this is the part we wish more people understood before they light anything.
Composite boards are usually installed with hidden fasteners in the grooves. You cannot lift one board out of the middle of a field. You have to work back from the nearest edge, releasing clips as you go, then reassemble. On a wide deck that can mean pulling fifteen or twenty boards to replace one.
Then there is color. A six year old deck has faded, evenly and gently, the way composite is supposed to. A brand new board of the same SKU has not. It will not match, and on a deck with any sun exposure it will not match for years. We have replaced fire damaged boards where the honest recommendation was to pull a board from a low visibility spot near the house and put the new one there instead, and that is more labor again.
Heat damage is not covered. It is out of pocket, and the labor is the expensive half.
Ranking the three, from safest to worst
Propane fire tables. The safest option on composite by a wide margin. The flame is contained, there are no embers, and a well designed table vents heat up and out rather than down. Most sit on a base that already isolates the burner from the surface. If somebody in the family wants fire on the deck and you want the least drama, this is the answer. Check the manufacturer’s clearance to combustibles anyway, and keep it away from railings and any fabric.
Solo Stove and similar stainless steel pits. Workable, with the right setup. Solo Stove’s own guidance is not ambiguous on this: a Stand is required at all times when burning on composite or PVC decking, and it is not framed as an optional accessory. The Stand lifts the unit roughly two and three quarter inches and lets air move underneath. Add a tested heat resistant mat beneath the Stand, because the Stand handles radiant heat and the mat handles the embers that pop out when you drop a log in. Burn dry hardwood, which sparks less than softwood or anything damp.
Chimineas. This is the one we would talk you out of. A terracotta chiminea has a solid base that sits flat and radiates heat straight down into a small area, which is exactly the load pattern composite handles worst. Clay chimineas crack, sometimes without warning, and a cracked chiminea can dump a bed of live coals sideways onto your deck. They are also top heavy and easy to knock over. Cast iron is better than clay on the cracking question and worse on weight. If you love the look, put it on the patio.
The one nobody else will mention: what it weighs
This is our actual job, so allow us the tangent.
Residential decks are designed for a uniform live load, typically 40 pounds per square foot plus dead load. Uniform is the operative word. A gas fire table with a masonry style surround, a full propane tank, and a bed of lava rock can run several hundred pounds sitting on a footprint of a few square feet. That is a concentrated point load, and it lands wherever you happened to set it, which is usually not over a joist.
On a well built frame that is fine. On a twenty year old frame with 24 inch joist spacing and some rot at the ledger, it is another straw. We size blocking under heavy features when we know they are coming, which is one of many reasons it is worth telling us at design time rather than after. If your deck is older and you are adding something heavy, it is worth having someone look underneath. That is often the same visit as a deck repair or resurfacing assessment.
Never under a roof
No open flame under a covered porch, a solid roof, or a motorized louvered pergola with the louvers closed. Not a Solo Stove, not a chiminea, not a wood pit.
The issue is carbon monoxide and smoke accumulation in a semi enclosed space, and it is a serious one rather than a warranty concern. Louvered systems like the Cabana X units we install open fully, and open is the only configuration where a fire feature belongs anywhere near one. If you are planning a covered porch over an existing deck, decide about the fire feature during design, because the two choices interact.
What we usually recommend instead
Most of the time, the better plan is to stop trying to put fire on the deck.
A small paver landing off the bottom step, or a patio section adjacent to the deck, solves the clearance question, the heat question, the point load question, and the warranty question in one move. The other approach, if the fire really has to be on the deck, is to design it in from the start. A gas fire feature framed into the deck, with the boards cut around it and non combustible material underneath, is what Trex describes and it is what we build when a client asks. It has to be planned, because it needs a gas line, blocking, and often a bump out in the layout. Retrofitting it later means opening the deck back up. Same story as deck lighting, which is trivial during the build and a real project afterward.
A short checklist before you light anything this fall
Confirm your clearance with the Naperville Fire Department rather than with a national blog post, ours included. Check your HOA rules, because several Naperville subdivisions have their own language on outdoor fire. Use the manufacturer’s stand plus a tested mat, always. Burn dry hardwood. Skip it entirely on windy nights, and Illinois gets plenty of those. Keep a hose or extinguisher within reach, and stay with the fire until it is fully out.
And accept the tradeoff honestly. Even done correctly, a wood fire on a composite deck carries some risk of a scorch that the warranty will not cover. Some of our clients decide that is worth it. Others move the fire to a patio and never think about it again. Both are reasonable, and we would rather you make that call with the real information than find out in November.
