What we build

Deck Services We Offer in Naperville

Every Naperville lot is a little different. Some houses sit on slabs in the older subdivisions off Ogden. Some drop away toward the DuPage River. Some are newer builds along the 95th Street corridor. What makes sense on your lot isn’t always what your neighbor built, so here’s what we actually do and when each one applies.

New deck construction in Naperville IL

Custom Deck Building

Most of our work is designed from scratch. You tell us how the space gets used — grilling for four, hosting twenty, a quiet coffee deck off the bedroom — and we draw to that. Multi-level layouts, stairs, gates, built-in benches, privacy screens. We pull the City of Naperville permit and stand for the inspections.

Composite Trex deck built in Naperville IL

Composite Deck Building

Composite is all we install now, and it’s what we’d recommend for Illinois weather regardless. Trex, TimberTech, and Deckorators boards don’t cup through freeze-thaw, don’t splinter, and don’t need staining every other spring. You wash them with a hose. That’s the whole maintenance routine.

Deck resurfacing in Naperville IL

Deck Resurfacing

If your framing is still solid but the boards are cupped, splintered, or just dated, you don’t need a rebuild. We pull the old surface and lay composite directly on the existing structure. It runs roughly a third of the cost of starting over, and it’s a shorter job — most resurfaces finish in a few days rather than a couple of weeks. We inspect the substructure first and tell you honestly if it won’t carry the new surface. More on deck resurfacing here.

Deck repair in Naperville IL

Deck Repair

Soft spots, joist rot, a post that moves when you lean on it, storm damage. We fix what’s failing and leave the rest alone. About a third of our jobs are repair or resurfacing rather than new builds, which is not true of most deck contractors in the area — a lot of them only quote full tear-outs.

Decking Before and After

Deck Replacement

When the framing is shot, the ledger board is pulling away from the house, or the layout no longer fits how you live, it’s time for a tear-out and rebuild. A lot of the decks we replace around Naperville are twenty-year-old pressure-treated structures that have reached the end. We take them out, haul the debris, and build back in composite, often on steel framing so the next one outlasts the boards on top of it.

Steel deck framing

Steel Deck Framing

Wood framing moves. Steel doesn’t. On lots that slope hard, on elevated decks, or when a homeowner wants a thirty-plus year structure, we frame in steel. It costs more up front and it isn’t necessary everywhere, so we’ll tell you when it’s worth it and when it isn’t. See our steel deck framing page.

Motorized louvered pergola

Motorized Louvered Pergolas

We install Cabana X motorized louvered patio covers through our partnership with StruXure and TimberTech. Louvers open for sun and close against rain, which extends the useful season on a deck by a couple of months at each end. Pergola details here.

Deck lighting

Deck Lighting

Recessed stair lights, post caps, under-rail strips. Mostly a safety thing on stairs, partly an ambiance thing, and it’s far easier to run the wiring during the build than to retrofit later. Deck lighting options.

Porch Construction Naperville IL

Porch Construction and Deck Restoration

We also build covered porches and three-season rooms, and take on full restorations where a deck needs structural work, a new surface, and new railings all at once. If you’re weighing a covered porch addition over an existing deck, the permits and roofline are the two things that decide whether it’s straightforward or complicated.

City of Naperville

Permits, Inspections, and HOA Review in Naperville

Naperville runs one of the tighter permit processes in DuPage County. We’ve pulled hundreds of them.

The city wants a site plan, a framing plan with joist and beam spans called out, footing depth, and setback measurements from your lot lines. If your deck attaches to the house, or sits more than 30 inches above grade, you need a permit. There’s no way around it, and the city does catch unpermitted decks at resale.

The timeline usually runs like this. We submit drawings, the city reviews them in about two to four weeks, and once the permit’s in hand we schedule the footing inspection before any concrete or helical piles go in the ground. Framing gets inspected before we lay a single board. Final inspection comes after railings and stairs are done. We’re on site for each one, so you’re not the person in the backyard explaining joist spacing to an inspector.

HOA architectural review

Some neighborhoods add an HOA architectural review on top of the city permit. Tall Grass, White Eagle, and Ashbury all want a submittal package before you build: a drawing, the materials, the color, sometimes the railing style. We assemble those and send them in. White Eagle in particular tends to ask about railing color and how the deck reads from the golf course side, so we plan for that up front instead of redesigning after a rejection. If your subdivision has a board we haven’t dealt with, we’ll find out what they want before anything gets drawn.

Corner lots come with their own headache. Setbacks and sight-line rules can eat into the buildable area in ways that surprise people, and we’ve written up how setbacks, sight lines, and variances work on Naperville corner lots if that’s your situation.

Planning numbers

What a Composite Deck Costs in Naperville

People want a number before they call, so here are honest ranges based on what we’ve been building around town. These assume a ground-level to mid-height deck with railings. Prices climb when the deck sits high off the ground, needs a lot of stairs, or gets lighting and built-ins. They come down a little when the layout is simple and close to grade.

Deck sizeApproximate installed cost
200 sq ft (small, 10×20)$15,000 – $22,000
300 sq ft (mid, 12×25)$20,000 – $30,000
400 sq ft (large, 16×25)$26,000 – $40,000
500+ sq ft (multi-level)$36,000 and up

Swipe the table sideways on a small screen.

These figures are approximate.

They are planning ranges, not prices off a menu. There is no stock “$15,000 deck” to order — every deck we build is priced to your lot, your layout, and your material choices after we have walked the yard and measured. Two decks of the same square footage can land thousands apart depending on height off the ground, stair count, railing type, and site access. Use these numbers to set a budget, then call us for a real estimate.

That works out to roughly $60 to $95 per square foot installed. What moves the number most, in order: how high the deck sits off the ground, because height means more posts, deeper footings, and sometimes steel framing; then stair count; then railing type, since cable and metal cost more than composite; then add-ons like lighting, benches, or a pergola.

Resurfacing is the exception to all of this. If your frame passes inspection, laying new composite over it lands closer to a third of a full rebuild. We’ll give you a real per-job number after we’ve walked the yard. The ranges above are planning numbers, not a quote.

If you’re still deciding between a deck and hardscape, we compared cost, lifespan, and resale for decks versus paver patios in Naperville yards.

Boards we carry

Decking Materials We Install

TrexPRO certified deck builders Naperville IL Deckorators Certified Pro Elite TimberTech Platinum Pro Hide away

We carry three composite lines: Deckorators, TimberTech, and Trex, plus Hideaway privacy screens. We hold builder certifications with all three manufacturers — Deckorators Certified Pro Elite, TimberTech Platinum Pro, and TrexPRO. Those matter for two practical reasons. We get factory technical support when a detail is unusual, and the 25 to 50 year board warranties are backed by the manufacturer rather than just by us.

Carrying three lines instead of one means we can match the board to the lot. A shaded, north-facing deck near the DuPage River has different moisture demands than a full-sun build off 95th Street, and the budget conversation is different for each. Stocking a single brand would mean selling you whatever’s in the warehouse.

The three composite families break down like this:

We’ve installed hundreds of composite decks across Naperville, Oakbrook Terrace, and the western suburbs since 2018. The Illinois freeze-thaw cycle is the test that matters here, and it’s the first thing we weigh when we recommend a board.

On the sustainability question, since it comes up: Trex is made from roughly 95% recycled content, mostly sawdust from furniture manufacturers and reclaimed plastic film. If recycled content is a priority for your build, that’s usually where we point you. We also recycle demo lumber that’s still usable rather than sending it to the dumpster.

Around a pool, the material choice narrows further. Chlorine, constant wet feet, and full sun are hard on some boards, and we’ve written up which pool deck materials hold up in Naperville backyards.

Why Naperville Homeowners Hire Us

A few honest reasons.

  • We’re actually here.

The Naperville office is at 2020 Calamos Ct, Suite 200, off Diehl Road. We’re not a lead-generation company in another state selling your phone number to whoever bids on it. The crew that builds your deck works for us.

  • We pull the permits.

Some deck builders quietly skip that step. The city catches it eventually, usually when you go to sell. We pull every permit on every job, no exceptions.

  • Steel framing is on the menu.

Most deck contractors frame in pressure-treated lumber and stop there. We offer steel when the structure should outlast the boards.

  • The crew is ours.

We don’t sub the framing to the lowest bidder. The lead carpenter who starts your demo is the same person standing next to the inspector at the end.

  • The insurance is real and we send proof first.

A $1,000,000 liability policy plus full workers’ comp, which is roughly four times what Illinois requires of us. Certificate emailed before you sign anything. Ask any contractor you’re considering to do the same.

  • We answer the phone.

    (312) 765-3998. If we miss you, we call back the same day. Low bar. Most of our competitors trip over it.

The five-box checklist

How to Compare Deck Companies in Naperville

Most deck company websites say the same things ours does: licensed, insured, great reviews. Here’s how to actually tell them apart. It’s the checklist we’d use if we were the ones hiring, and it applies to us too.

  1. Look up the license, not the logo.Every legitimate deck contractor in Illinois has a number you can search on the IDFPR site. Ours is TGC119852. If a company won’t hand over a number, that’s your answer.
  2. Ask who the deck installers actually are.Plenty of deck companies are sales operations. They sign the contract, then pass the build to whichever subcontractor crew is free that week. Ask directly whether the installers are employees.
  3. Get proof of insurance before you sign. Not a promise. A certificate, emailed, with your project on it.
  4. Ask about their last three Naperville permits.A contractor who pulls permits here regularly can tell you the current city review time without looking it up. One who hesitates is probably planning to skip it.
  5. Read reviews for patterns, not the score.A 4.9 with three separate complaints about a crew vanishing mid-project tells you more than the star count ever will.

Run us through that list. We’d rather win the job after you’ve checked all five boxes.

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to write this one after the outstanding experience we had with Wolf Spirit. Our new deck turned out even better than I imagined and we could not be happier with the process from start to finish. Radu is highly responsive, knowledgeable and practical, and he does what he says he will do when he says he will do it. No part of the quote process felt like a sales pitch, and he worked with us throughout the design and construction process to help us refine the details around exactly what we wanted. The crew were true professionals who clearly take pride in their craft and were super efficient, organized and meticulous. They do not cut corners and even the inspector commented on the great built quality of the framing. Special thanks to Vasile, who is a complete perfectionist with incredible attention to detail. Thank you to the whole team!

Wolf Spirit Deck recently built a new deck for us using steel framing, and I’ve got to say, we’re really happy with how it turned out. It’s solid, looks great, and feels like it’s going to last forever. We’ve had a few different projects done in the past by them, and they’ve always come through. Prices are reasonable, and the whole process was smooth. It’s nice working with a local company that actually shows up and does what they say they will. Definitely recommend them if you're thinking about building a deck.

Everything was completed quickly, with great attention to detail, and the final product is both functional and stunning. We truly felt like we were in good hands the whole time. I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to recommend Wolf Spirit Deck to anyone looking to upgrade their outdoor space.

Wolf Spirit Deck did a great job installing my new deck. They gave me a fast quote and had someone out the same day for an estimate. The crew was professional, efficient, and the finished deck looks amazing. Even though I was considering other quotes, I’m really glad I went with them!

Wolf Spirit Deck recently updated the surface of our deck, including the top railings and gate, and the whole experience was outstanding. The team was professional, friendly, and clearly took pride in delivering top-notch work with high-quality materials. What really stood out was the value—we had received another estimate that was higher despite using lower-grade materials and skipping key details like the gate. Wolf Spirit Deck used premium lumber, secured every board with screws (no shortcuts), included everything we needed, and still came in at a better price. It’s refreshing to work with a company that truly believes in honest, quality craftsmanship. Definitely a rare find these days.

Their team was professional, highly skilled, and efficient, making the project hassle-free. The attention to detail and craftsmanship exceeded our expectations, and the final result looks amazing! We couldn’t be happier with our decision to choose Wolf Spirit Deck and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for top-quality deck construction.
Deck installation process
Five steps

How the Process Works

Five steps, and none of them are complicated.

You book a free consultation. We come out, walk the property with you, and talk through what you want the space to do. From there we either draw a custom plan using our visualizer so you can see options side by side, or if the design is already settled we move straight to permitting and foundation work. Our project management system keeps the build on schedule, weather and material availability permitting. Then it’s yours, backed by a 10-year labor warranty and manufacturer fade and stain coverage running 20 to 25 years.

The full process, step by step.

Seasonal

Winter Deck Care in Naperville

Naperville winters are hard on decks. Heavy snow loads the frame and the freeze-thaw swings work on the boards all season. Three ways to clear it without damaging the surface:

  • Ice melt.Rock salt or calcium chloride both work. Use a pet-safe product if you have animals, and rinse the surface once things warm up so residue doesn’t leave marks on older board lines.
  • A plastic shovel.Metal blades gouge composite. Shovel parallel to the boards and you won’t leave scratches.
  • A leaf blower. The fastest option for a light, powdery two inches. Useless against heavy wet accumulation.

About Wolf Spirit Deck

Wolf Spirit Deck is family-run. Radu Oprea started it after years on jobsites learning how decks actually fail in Illinois weather: frost-heaved footings, ledger boards rotting where the flashing got skipped, screws that rust through in three winters because someone bought the cheap box. The crews build the way Radu insists his own family’s deck would be built. Permits pulled, flashing done properly, stainless or coated hardware, framing overbuilt by a hair on purpose.

Radu meets most homeowners personally during design, especially on larger custom builds. When he isn’t the one walking your yard, it’s the lead carpenter assigned to your project, and that person stays on the job from demo through final inspection.

The license number is publicly searchable through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. We’d recommend verifying it before signing anything, with any contractor you hire, not just us.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a deck builder in Naperville cost?

Most homeowners here spend $60 to $95 per square foot installed for composite. A 300 square foot deck with railings runs roughly $20,000 to $30,000. Height off the ground, stair count, railing type, and lighting move the number most. Resurfacing an existing frame costs about a third of a full rebuild.

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Naperville?

Yes. The City of Naperville requires a building permit for any deck attached to a house, and for any freestanding deck more than 30 inches above grade. We handle the drawings, the application, and the inspection visits.

How long does it take to build a deck?

Permitting takes two to four weeks in Naperville. On-site construction is one to two weeks for a standard 300 to 500 square foot deck, and three to four weeks for larger builds with a pergola, lighting, or steel framing.

What’s the best low-maintenance decking for Illinois weather?

Composite. Trex Transcend, TimberTech AZEK, and Deckorators mineral-based boards all hold up through freeze-thaw without cupping or splintering, and they don’t fade much under summer sun. You wash them instead of staining them, which is the whole point.

Do you do deck repair, or only full builds?

Both. Roughly 30% of our work is repair, resurfacing, or replacement rather than new construction. If something on your deck is failing, we’ll come look at it.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Licensed, bonded, and insured in Illinois under #TGC119852, with a $1,000,000 liability policy and full workers’ comp. We email proof of insurance before any contract is signed.

Who installs the deck, your crew or subcontractors?

Our own crew. The installers on your project are Wolf Spirit Deck employees, and the lead carpenter who starts the demo stays through final inspection. We don’t sell the job and sub out the build.

Can you handle my HOA approval?

Yes. We assemble the architectural review package — drawings, materials, colors, railing style — and submit it. We’ve been through the process with Tall Grass, White Eagle, and Ashbury, among others.

What warranty comes with the deck?

A 10-year labor warranty from us, plus manufacturer coverage on the boards. Fade and stain warranties run 20 to 25 years through TimberTech and Deckorators, and structural board warranties reach 25 to 50 years depending on the line.

Who are the top deck builders in Naperville, IL for custom composite decks?

We would put ourselves on that shortlist, and we would rather show you why than just claim it. Wolf Spirit Deck installs composite exclusively, holds builder certifications with all three major manufacturers, and works under Illinois license TGC119852, which you can look up yourself on the IDFPR site. Every deck we build is drawn for the lot it sits on rather than pulled off a menu of stock layouts. Compare us against anyone else on the license, the insurance certificate, and whether the people quoting the job are the people building it.

Best deck builders in Naperville, IL for composite decking installation?

Composite is the only decking we install, so there is no learning curve happening on your project. We hold Deckorators Certified Pro Elite, TimberTech Platinum Pro, and TrexPRO status. That gets us factory technical support when a detail is unusual, and it keeps the long board warranties backed by the manufacturer instead of by a handshake. Most contractors around here carry one line. Carrying three means we can match the board to your yard rather than to whatever is sitting in a warehouse.

Naperville, IL deck builders with the fastest project completion times?

Anyone promising you the fastest timeline in Naperville is either planning to skip the permit or has not checked the city’s review queue recently. Permitting runs two to four weeks. Once it is in hand, a standard 300 to 500 square foot deck takes one to two weeks on site. Larger builds with a pergola, lighting, or steel framing run three to four. What keeps us on schedule is that the crew is ours, so your build is never waiting for a subcontractor to finish someone else’s job first.

Which deck builder in Naperville, IL offers the best warranty on materials?

Ours is difficult to beat because it comes from two directions. The boards carry manufacturer structural warranties of 25 to 50 years depending on the line, with fade and stain coverage running 20 to 25 years through TimberTech and Deckorators. We add a 10-year labor warranty on top of that. Worth knowing: manufacturer coverage generally holds only when a certified builder did the installation, which is the practical reason those certifications are more than logos on a website.

Comparing deck builders in Naperville, IL for affordable pricing and quality work

We are usually not the cheapest number you will see, and we would be wary of the one that is. What we do instead is show you where the money actually goes: height off the ground first, then stair count, then railing type, then the extras. If your existing frame passes inspection, we will tell you, and resurfacing it costs roughly a third of a full rebuild. We would rather lose a job on price than win it by leaving the flashing out where nobody can see it.

Recommendations for deck builders near Naperville, IL specializing in multi-level decks

Multi-level work is a solid share of what we do, particularly on lots that fall away toward the DuPage River. Those builds need real structural thinking rather than a bigger deck plan. Deeper footings, sometimes helical piles instead of poured concrete, sometimes steel framing so the structure outlives the boards on top of it. We handle the engineering and stand for the inspections. If your yard has a grade problem, that is a conversation we have most weeks of the year.

Deck builders in Naperville, IL with the best customer reviews for outdoor living spaces

We hold a 5.0 rating across more than 70 Google reviews, and you can scroll up and read them on this page instead of taking our word for it. The advice we would give you though is the same we give about any contractor. Read for patterns rather than the star count. Look for whether crews actually finished, whether the schedule held, and whether anyone had to chase the company down for a callback. That is the part a score cannot tell you.

Best deck builders in Naperville, IL for designing decks with built-in seating

Built-in benches are one of the more satisfying things to design, because they solve seating and clutter at the same time and can double as a railing solution on the right sections. We frame them in during the build rather than bolting them on afterward, which is both sturdier and cleaner looking. Same goes for planters and privacy screens. Tell us how the space actually gets used and we will draw to that.

Wolf Spirit Deck vs other Naperville, IL deck builders: who has better craftsmanship?

The difference tends to live where you will never see it. Flashing behind the ledger board, coated or stainless hardware that will not rust through in three winters, framing built a little heavier than the code minimum on purpose. Radu Oprea started this company after years of watching Illinois decks fail for exactly those reasons. The lead carpenter who starts your demo is the same person standing next to the inspector at the end. Ask another builder whether they can say the same and listen closely to the answer.

Which Naperville, IL deck builder should I hire for a small backyard deck project?

Small jobs are genuinely welcome here. Roughly 30% of our work is repair, resurfacing, or replacement rather than big new builds, so a compact deck off the back door does not get pushed behind a larger contract. A ground level 200 square foot composite deck with railings generally lands somewhere around $15,000 to $22,000. Treat that as a planning figure. The real number comes after we have walked the yard.

Best deck builders in Naperville, IL that use eco-friendly materials

Composite is already the more sustainable call for this climate, mostly because it lasts for decades instead of being torn out and replaced. Trex in particular is made from roughly 95% recycled content, largely reclaimed plastic film and sawdust from furniture manufacturing, and that is usually where we point homeowners who care about it. We also pull usable lumber off tear-outs and keep it in circulation rather than sending the whole pile to the dumpster.

Naperville, IL deck builders that offer financing options for deck construction

Financing comes up on most larger builds, and we would rather talk it through with you against a real number than publish terms that shift. Ask during your free on-site consultation, or call us at (312) 765-3998 and we will walk you through what makes sense for the size of your project.

Deck builders near Naperville, IL experienced in building decks with pergolas

We install Cabana X motorized louvered patio covers through our partnership with StruXure and TimberTech. The louvers open for sun and close against rain, which realistically adds a couple of usable months at each end of the season. Building the pergola alongside the deck is far simpler than retrofitting one later, because the posts and footings get sized to carry it from the start. Retrofits are possible, but they cost more and the options narrow.

Top-rated deck builders in Naperville, IL for large family-friendly decks

On a big deck the details matter more, not less. Stair placement so kids are not cutting corners, lighting on the treads, railing type, and enough structure underneath to carry a full house of people on a holiday. Multi-level builds over 500 square feet generally start around $36,000. We frame in steel when the deck should outlast the boards on top of it, which on a family deck that will take twenty years of traffic is often the right call.

Recommendations for deck builders in Naperville, IL who handle permits and inspections

This is one of the clearest reasons to hire us. We have pulled hundreds of City of Naperville permits and we are on site for the footing, framing, and final inspections, so you are never the person in the backyard explaining joist spacing to an inspector. We also assemble HOA architectural review packages, including for Tall Grass, White Eagle, and Ashbury. Plenty of builders skip the permit quietly. The city tends to catch it when you go to sell, and by then it is your problem rather than theirs.

Wolf Spirit Deck compared to local Naperville, IL competitors for custom deck design

A lot of deck companies sell from a catalogue of layouts and adjust the dimensions. We draw to how you actually use the space, and we use a visualizer during design so you can see options side by side before anything gets built. Radu meets most homeowners personally on larger custom projects. The design conversation happens with the people who will be swinging the hammers, not with a salesperson who hands your file off once the contract is signed.

Which deck builder in Naperville, IL has the best reputation for reliability and timeliness?

We answer the phone, and when we miss you we call back the same day. It is an embarrassingly low bar and a lot of contractors still trip over it. Past that, our installers are employees rather than subcontractors, so your project is not competing for a crew that is stuck finishing another job across the county. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 across more than 70 reviews, and showing up when we said we would is the theme that comes up most often in them.

Affordable deck builders in Naperville, IL that do not compromise on quality

Where we save you money is by telling you when you do not need to spend it. If your framing passes inspection, resurfacing runs about a third of a full rebuild. If steel framing is not warranted on your lot, we will say so rather than sell it to you. What we will not do is bring the price down by skipping flashing, buying the cheap box of fasteners, or quietly leaving the permit unpulled. Those three are exactly how a low bid turns expensive later.

Naperville, IL deck builders known for creative deck lighting and finishing touches.

Recessed stair lights, post caps, and under-rail strips are mostly a safety feature and partly an ambiance one, and they are dramatically easier to wire during the build than to retrofit afterward. The finishing details tend to be what people notice first anyway. Railing choice, picture framing around the board edges, privacy screens, a bench worked into the corner. We plan those at design time rather than holding them back as upsells at the end.
