What A Louvered Roof Does On A Naperville Deck Or Patio
A louvered roof, sometimes called a bioclimatic pergola, is an aluminum frame with a roof made of blades that turn.
A shingled porch roof is always shade, and an open pergola lets the rain through. With the Alba you choose from a remote. Close the blades for a storm, angle them at midday to bounce the sun upward while air keeps moving through, or open them when you want the sky.
That range is useful here, where a Saturday can start with hot sun on the back of the house and end in a thunderstorm. The Alba (the name is Italian for “dawn”) is the louvered roof in Corradi’s line and the one we install. Corradi has made outdoor shade systems in Italy since 1978 and has been in the United States since 2010.
We’re an authorized Corradi installer, and every installation is done by our own crew.

How The Alba Handles Naperville Weather
Weather is the first thing people ask us about, so here is what Corradi publishes for each season, including the snow figure we’d want you to read closely.
- Summer SunAngled blades deflect the sun upward and let air move through. Low evening sun comes in under any roof, so that’s the job for retractable solar screens between the posts.
- RainCorradi rates the Alba as waterproof with the blades fully closed. The convex blades channel water to the sides, into a perimeter gutter, and down through the posts. An optional splash guard keeps it from splashing in at the edges.
- WindCorradi rates the Alba up to 75 mph with the blades closed. Rain and wind sensors are optional, and we set them up at the walkthrough.
- SnowCorradi lists a maximum payload of 22.53 pounds per square foot on an 11’2″ x 19′ system, figured for the worst case of fully closed blades and a 110-inch passage height. In snow, Corradi recommends setting the blades at 90° so it doesn’t pile up on them. With the blades open, expect snow on the deck or patio below. Before you order, we compare the load the City requires at your address with Corradi’s rating for your size.

Six Ways To Install An Alba
Most of the decision comes down to what the roof will attach to and where you want the posts. All of these photos come from Corradi USA and show dealer projects in other states and Canada.
.jpg?language=en)
Freestanding
It stands on its own posts and footings with nothing fastened to the house. That makes it the usual choice for a patio out in the yard or a spot by the pool.

Wall-Mounted
One side fastens to the house and posts carry the other. We look at what’s behind the siding first, and whether the roof fits under the windows and eaves above it.
Liberty
Corradi’s Alba Liberty comes without pillars and goes into or on top of an existing or planned structure. It’s worth a look if you already have a solid frame or columns you want to keep.
.jpg?language=en)
Cantilevered
The pillars can be offset by 20% of the projection. Moving them back keeps a post out of a walkway, a dining layout, or the view from your kitchen window.
.jpg?language=en)
Side By Side
Shared pillars join multiple systems, which is how you cover more area than one module allows while using fewer posts along the seam.
.jpg?language=en)
On Short Pillars
Corradi dealers have mounted the Alba on short pillars above a stone outdoor kitchen. Tell us if you have a kitchen or knee wall in mind, and we’ll work out whether it can carry the roof.
Screens, Lights, And Colors For Your Alba
The roof handles what comes from above. These add-ons cover the sides, the evenings, and how the frame looks against your house.
.jpg?language=en)
Retractable Solar Screens
Screens drop between the posts to block low sun, add privacy, and help with bugs in mosquito season. They come in a range of fabrics and colors, manual or motorized with a wireless remote, and they roll up out of sight when you want the view back.

Integrated LED Lights
Optional LEDs sit inside the rotating blades, so nothing hangs from the frame. They dim from the remote, which lets you keep using the space after sunset.
_new0.jpg?language=en)
Bi-Color Frames
The blades and frame can be different colors, and Corradi doesn’t charge extra for it. A two-tone roof can tie into your trim or railing, or it can stay quiet against the house if your HOA prefers that.

Heaters
Corradi’s gallery shows Albas with heaters in British Columbia and Texas. Heaters aren’t on the Alba brochure’s options list, so we’d work through wiring and placement for your layout before quoting them.
Frame Colors
Corradi offers nine standard colors, and custom RAL colors are also available. Colors look different on a phone or monitor, so please don’t make the final choice from this page.

Louvered Roof, Retractable Pergola, Awning, Or Fixed Roof?
The Alba doesn’t suit every yard. We install the whole Corradi line, so we can point you to a different system if it fits your space better.

Planning An Alba Around Your Deck Or Patio
The trouble with a louvered roof usually starts below it, with posts bolted through deck boards or a drain that empties onto the stairs.
- On A New DeckWe set the post footings while the deck goes in and route the drains before the boards go down. Building new is the simplest case, whether that’s a composite deck or one with steel framing.
- On A Deck You Already HaveWe check the framing and footings first and tell you plainly whether they can carry a roof. If they can’t, we’ll show you what the fix involves or lay the roof out with its own footings.
- On A PatioPavers and many older slabs weren’t built to hold a roof post. We look at what’s underneath and plan footings where the posts land, which can mean lifting some pavers.
- Where The Water GoesThe Alba drains through its posts, so post placement decides where the water ends up. We plan that with the layout, before anything is ordered.
Corradi USA’s own overview of the Alba.
Already planning a deck? Tell us about the roof now, even if you’d add it a few years from now. Footings are far easier to place before the boards go down. See our Naperville deck building page.
Permits, HOA Review, And Utility Lines In Naperville
We’ve pulled hundreds of deck permits in Naperville. A roof adds height and new post locations, and those bring a few more things to check.
- City Building PermitThe City of Naperville requires an issued permit before construction starts on decks, patios, open porches, and other secondary structures. A pergola built into a deck’s design and separate from the main building can be included with the deck. A roof attached to the house may be reviewed differently, so we confirm it with the City before anything is ordered. On our deck projects, review takes about two to four weeks.
- HOA Architectural ReviewTall Grass, White Eagle, and Ashbury all want a submittal package before you build, and we’ve been through the process with each. White Eagle tends to ask how a deck reads from the golf course side. A 119-inch roof raises the same question, so we plan frame color and post placement with that in mind.
- Underground Electric LinesNaperville’s electric utility requires deck posts to stay 18 inches to the side of underground service lines, and it doesn’t allow those lines under a deck or patio. Any relocation is at the owner’s expense, and the utility warns it can run into the thousands, so we check post locations before you commit. We also call J.U.L.I.E. at 811 at least 48 hours before digging.
- Overhead Electric LinesThe utility’s rules call for overhead service lines to be 10 feet above a deck or patio, with 3 feet of horizontal clearance from the deck. With an Alba standing 119 inches tall, we look at overhead lines on the first visit.
Our quotes are written and itemized line by line, so you can see what each part of the project costs before you sign.
How We Install A Louvered Roof In Naperville
One company handles it from the first visit to the final walkthrough.
- Free On-Site VisitWe measure and look at what the roof would stand on or attach to. We also note sun direction, wind exposure, the electric meter, overhead lines, and any windows above the roofline.
- Choosing The Layout And OptionsWe settle on the mounting, size, colors, and any LEDs, screens, or sensors. You get the quote in writing.
- Permit, HOA, And Utility ChecksWe find out what the City (or your town) and your HOA require, prepare the drawings, and submit them.
- Footings And FramingCorradi builds each Alba to measure. While yours is in production, we pour footings or set helical piles, add any framing the mounts need, and build or repair the deck if that’s part of the job.
- Installation And WalkthroughOur crew installs the roof and sets up the motor, remote, and any sensors. Before we leave, we show you how it all works, including setting the blades for snow.
What Affects The Cost Of A Louvered Roof In Naperville
Every Alba is made to measure, so we don’t publish a price list. These are the things that move the number on your quote.
-
Size And Modules
Width and projection set the base. Going past one module means a double module or joined systems.
-
How It Mounts
Freestanding needs posts and footings at every corner. Wall-mounted uses the house along one side, if the wall can take it. Offset pillars change the layout too.
-
What It Stands On
A deck we’re building at the same time is the simplest case. An older deck or patio may need new footings or framing first.
-
Screens
The number of sides you close in, the fabric, and whether you choose manual or motorized all affect the price.
-
LEDs And Sensors
Integrated lights and rain and wind sensors add to the base system. Bi-color frames don’t, since Corradi includes that at no extra charge.
-
Site Conditions
A meter or service line near a post location can change the layout. If one has to move, that cost falls on the owner, so we check early.

Louvered Roof Questions We Hear In Naperville
How Much Does A Louvered Roof Cost In Naperville?
It depends on the size, how it mounts, what it stands on, and the options you pick. Each Alba is made to measure, so we don’t publish a price list. We’ll measure, go through the options with you, and give you an itemized written quote at no charge.
Is A Louvered Roof Waterproof?
Corradi rates the Alba as waterproof when the blades are fully closed. Its convex blades channel water to the sides, into a perimeter gutter that drains through the posts. With the blades open, rain comes through.
Can The Alba Handle Naperville Snow?
Corradi lists a maximum payload of 22.53 pounds per square foot on an 11’2″ x 19′ system with the blades fully closed, and it recommends setting the blades at 90° in snow so it doesn’t pile up on them. With the blades open, snow can reach the deck or patio below. Before you order, we compare the load the City requires at your address with Corradi’s rating for your size.
How Much Wind Can The Alba Take?
Corradi rates it up to 75 mph with the blades closed. Rain and wind sensors are available as options.
How Big Can A Louvered Roof Be?
A single Alba module goes up to 177 x 238 inches (14’9″ x 19’10”), and a double module goes up to 236 x 238 inches (19’8″ x 19’10”). Shared pillars can join multiple systems to cover more area. Standard total height is 119 inches.
Can You Add A Louvered Roof To My Existing Deck Or Patio?
Often, yes. The Alba can be freestanding, wall-mounted, or built into an existing structure. We inspect what’s under your deck or patio first. If the framing or slab can’t carry posts, we’ll show you what it would take to fix that, or lay the roof out with its own footings.
Do I Need A Permit For A Louvered Roof In Naperville?
Plan on it. The City of Naperville requires an issued building permit before construction on decks, patios, open porches, and other secondary structures on a residential property. We prepare the drawings, submit them, and stand for the inspections. If your HOA has an architectural review, we prepare that package too.
What’s The Difference Between A Louvered Roof And A Retractable Pergola?
A louvered roof has rotating aluminum blades that control light and airflow and shed rain when closed. A retractable pergola has a fabric canopy that slides back to leave open sky. If you care most about adjusting sun and air through the day, the Alba usually makes more sense. If you want the whole sky on a nice evening, look at a Pergotenda®.
How Do You Control The Blades? Is There An App?
The Alba runs from a Somfy wireless transmitter, which is a remote. Corradi’s spec sheet doesn’t list a phone app, so if phone control matters to you, ask us before you order. The optional LEDs also dim from a remote.
Can I Close In The Sides?
Yes. Corradi’s retractable screens fit between the Alba’s posts for sun protection, privacy, and insect control, and they can be manual or motorized. Aura sliding shutter panels are also available.
How Long Does A Louvered Roof Project Take?
Each Alba is made to measure, so the timeline starts with production. We confirm the lead time when you order and schedule the footings, framing, and any deck work so everything is ready when the roof arrives. City permit review on our deck projects takes about two to four weeks, and HOA review can add time.
Who Makes The Alba?
Corradi, which started as a small workshop in Italy in 1978 and has been in the United States since 2010. Corradi authorizes and trains its dealers, and Wolf Spirit Deck is an authorized installer serving Naperville and the western suburbs.
