By Radu Oprea, Owner, Wolf Spirit DeckIllinois Contractor License #TGC119852Last updated: May 2026 A homeowner in the 60565 zip code called us last spring for a fourth opinion on her deck project. She had three quotes already. The spread was so wide she thought one of them had to be a typo. The numbers, for the same 16 by 20 deck off the back of a two-story colonial: She gave us permission to share the bid sheets, anonymized, in a blog post. We blacked out names and contact info. Everything else is exactly what each contractor put on paper. If you are weighing quotes from deck contractors in Naperville right now, this post is for […]

We get the same question almost every week: “Which decking actually holds up in Naperville?” Cedar, Trex, or TimberTech. People have read the brochures, watched the YouTube reviews, and they still don’t trust the answer because every reviewer is somewhere with mild winters and predictable summers. Naperville is not that. So this year we did something we’d been putting off. We pulled our project files from 2020 and 2021, picked decks we’d built in the same zip codes (60540, 60563, 60564, 60565), and went back to inspect them. Same builder, same crews, similar exposures, similar homeowner habits. As close to a controlled comparison as you get outside a lab. Twenty-one decks total. Seven cedar, seven […]

By Radu Oprea, Owner, Wolf Spirit Deck Illinois Contractor License #TGC119852 · Naperville, ILLast updated: April 2026 The City of Naperville will give you a building permit for almost any deck design that meets code. Your HOA is the harder gate. We’ve had clean, code-compliant designs sit in architectural review for six weeks because the railing color was off by half a shade from the homeowner’s siding. This is a subdivision-by-subdivision walk-through of the four Naperville HOAs we deal with most often: Tall Grass, White Eagle, Ashbury, and Stillwater. The notes below come from the architectural review letters we’ve prepared for clients in each neighborhood over the last several years. HOA covenants change, and individual […]

By Radu Oprea, Owner, Wolf Spirit Deck Illinois Contractor License #TGC119852 · Naperville, ILLast updated: April 2026 Almost every deck in Naperville needs a building permit before you start work. The exceptions are narrow, and the homeowners who try to skip the process usually find out the hard way, sometimes years later when they go to sell the house. We pull permits in Naperville every week. This is how the process actually works in 2026, with the real fees from the city’s own monthly reports, real timelines from our own jobs, and the things I see go wrong when a homeowner or an out-of-town contractor tries to handle it on their own. Do you need […]

When summer finally hits Naperville, we all want to be outside. But there’s a specific kind of “oops” moment that happens when you step out onto your deck mid-July and realize it’s basically a giant frying pan. If you’ve ever had to do the “hot sand dance” just to get to your grill, you know exactly what I mean. At Wolf Spirit Deck, we get asked the “heat question” more than almost anything else. Since we live and work right here in the Chicagoland area, we know that our humidity plus that direct afternoon sun can turn a beautiful deck into a literal no-go zone. So, let’s talk shop—human to human—about what actually works when […]
