Composite deck builders in Joliet, IL

Most of our Joliet customers end up choosing composite over wood, and the reason is usually the same: nobody wants to sand and re-stain a deck every other year. Composite boards from TimberTech and Deckorators are capped on all four sides, so they don’t fade like the early-generation composites from the 2000s did. We’ve installed composite decks here that are eight or nine years old and still look like the install photos.

    Deck Builders Joliet IL

That said, composite isn’t always the right answer. Wood is still cheaper up front — usually 30 to 40% less — and pressure-treated pine or cedar holds up fine if you’re willing to maintain it. The trade-off is real, and we’ll tell you honestly which one fits your house, your budget, and how much time you actually want to spend on deck care. If you want the lowest maintenance possible, go composite. If you want a $12k deck instead of an $18k deck and you don’t mind a power-wash every spring, go wood.

For pool decks we almost always push composite, because chlorine destroys wood sealers and the slip rating on textured composite is better. For elevated decks we’ll spec steel framing regardless of the surface board, because the soil movement in Will County will warp a wood frame within ten years.

Deck resurfacing in Joliet — when it makes sense, when it doesn’t

A lot of Joliet homes built between 2000 and 2010 have decks where the frame is still solid but the surface boards are cupped, splintering, or just ugly. If the joists pass an awl test (we poke them with a pick — soft wood means rot, firm wood means structure is fine) and the ledger board is flashed correctly, resurfacing is a real option and it saves you 40–50% versus a full rebuild.

When resurfacing does NOT make sense: if the ledger is bolted into the rim joist without flashing (common in pre-2004 Joliet builds), if the footings are shallower than 42 inches (Joliet’s frost line), or if the joist spacing is 24 inches OC and you want composite boards (most composites need 16 inches OC). In those cases we’ll tell you to rebuild instead, even though resurfacing is the bigger sale for us. We’d rather lose the upsell than warranty a deck we know won’t last.

    Deck repair in Joliet, IL

Common repairs we get called for in this area: rotted ledger boards (always check after a wet spring), wobbly railings that fail the 200 lb code load, popped fasteners from thermal expansion, cracked stair stringers, and water damage where the deck meets the house siding. Most repair calls take a day or two. If we open up a section and find more rot than the homeowner described, we’ll stop, show you, and re-quote before continuing — no surprise bills at the end.

Why Joliet homeowners hire Wolf Spirit Deck

Radu Oprea, our founder and CEO, has been building decks in the Chicago south and southwest suburbs for over a decade. He started Wolf Spirit Deck because he was tired of watching corner-cutting on framing and flashing on jobs he was hired to fix. Every Joliet deck we build is permitted with the City of Joliet or the relevant township, framed to current IRC and Illinois code, and inspected before we cover anything up.

Things our Joliet customers tell us mattered to them:

    • We pull our own permits. You don’t chase city hall.
    • We give a fixed written quote — no time-and-materials surprises.
    • We’re licensed and insured in Illinois (Lic. #TGC119852) and we’ll show you the certificate.
    • We use steel framing on anything elevated or near a pool, not as an upcharge gimmick but because it actually outlasts wood by 20+ years in our climate.
    • We don’t subcontract the build. The crew that quotes the job is the crew that finishes it.

We’re not the cheapest deck contractor in Joliet, and we don’t try to be. The cheapest quote on the block usually skips the flashing, skips the proper footing depth for our 42-inch frost line, and uses joist hangers rated for the wrong load. That deck looks the same on day one. It does not look the same on year eight.

Materials we use on Joliet decks

We’re a TimberTech Gold Contractor, a Deckorators authorized dealer, and a Hideaway certified installer. That’s not a marketing line — it means TimberTech and Deckorators back their boards with 20–25 year fade and stain warranties on the projects we install, and they pull those warranties from contractors who don’t follow spec. For pergolas we install StruXure Cabana X motorized louvered systems with integrated rain sensors. For elevated and pool deck framing we use Fortress Evolution and TimberTech EverStrong galvanized steel — same products used on commercial rooftop decks downtown.

We’ll bring sample boards to your first site visit so you can see the color, the cap texture, and the embossing in your actual sunlight, not under a showroom bulb.

Frequently asked questions about deck building in Joliet, IL

How much does a custom deck cost in Joliet, IL?

For 2026, a basic pressure-treated wood deck in Joliet runs roughly $40–$55 per square foot installed. Composite runs $65–$95 per square foot depending on the line (Deckorators Voyage on the higher end, TimberTech Reliaboard on the lower end). Steel framing adds about $8–$12 per square foot but doubles the structural lifespan. Most Joliet decks we build land between $18,000 and $42,000 all in. Your free quote will give you a fixed number for your specific project.

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Joliet?

Yes. The City of Joliet requires a building permit for any deck over 30 inches off grade, attached to a house, or with a roof. Unincorporated Will County has similar rules. We pull the permit for you and meet the inspector on site — it’s included in our quote.

How long does a deck installation take in Joliet?

Most Joliet deck builds take 1–3 weeks of on-site work after permit approval. Permitting through the City of Joliet typically takes 2–4 weeks. Larger multi-level or pool decks can run 4–6 weeks total.

Do you build pool decks around inground pools?

Yes. Pool decks are one of our most common Joliet projects. We use slip-rated composite (Deckorators Vault has a textured cap that’s ADA slip-compliant when wet) and we coordinate the deck install with your pool contractor so the coping, expansion joint, and skimmer access all line up.

Can you repair a deck someone else built?

Yes. About a third of our repair work is on decks we didn’t originally build. We’ll do a free structural assessment first and tell you honestly whether it’s worth repairing or whether you’d be putting good money into a deck that needs to come down.

    Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Wolf Spirit Deck holds Illinois General Contractor License #TGC119852 and carries full general liability and workers’ comp insurance. We’ll email you the certificate of insurance before work starts.

What’s the difference between resurfacing and replacing my deck?

Resurfacing keeps your existing frame and replaces only the surface boards and railings — usually 40–50% cheaper than a full rebuild. Replacing means tearing everything down to the footings and starting fresh. The right answer depends on whether your joists and ledger are still structurally sound. We’ll inspect before quoting either option.

How far in advance should I book?

For a summer install in Joliet, get on our calendar by February or March. We typically book out 6–10 weeks ahead in peak season (May through August). Fall and early spring installs are easier to schedule on shorter notice.
