A retractable awning gives you shade off the back of the house without posts or footings. It rolls out when the afternoon sun reaches the deck, then goes back against the wall when you want the sky.

When A Retractable Awning Is The Right Choice
If your deck is in good shape and your main problem is the afternoon sun, you may not need a roof at all.
Folding arms push the fabric out from a bar on the wall, and a motor or crank pulls it back in. Nothing touches the deck, so you don’t need footings or holes through your boards. It’s a smaller job than a pergola or louvered roof, and the yard looks the same as it did once the awning is in.
An awning is a sun product first. Corradi describes these systems in terms of shade and sun protection, and only the Frame model is listed for rain, under specific conditions. If you want to sit outside during a storm, look at a louvered roof or a retractable pergola instead.
We’re an authorized Corradi installer, and every installation is done by our own crew.

The Five Corradi Awning Models
All five are made to measure. They’re designed by ShadeLab and sold in the U.S. by Corradi USA. The main differences are how wide they go, what they mount to, and whether the fabric is covered when it’s retracted.
Klip And Klip Pod
The Only Model With A Crank
Klip is an open-roll awning with a square bar and a round front bar, and it reaches 30 feet wide. It’s also the only awning here that can run on a hand crank, up to 20 feet wide, which helps if there’s no power nearby.
Klip Pod adds a rounded case that protects the rolled fabric from rain and debris. It’s motorized only and stops at 17’8″ wide.
- Wall, Ceiling, Or Roof Mount
- 11’6″ Projection
- Pitch From 5° To 65°
- Optional Hood On Klip
Svet
For The Long Back Wall
The Svet goes up to 30 feet wide and 13’6″ out, which is the largest arm awning here. It has a bold square front bar and an embedded roll tube bracket that keeps the profile simple.
It’s open roll, so we’d usually suggest the protective hood here. LEDs on the front bar are optional, and you can add a motor override.
- Wall, Ceiling, Or Roof Mount
- Pitch From 5° To 40°
- LED Front Bar Option
- Optional Hood
Shan
Closes Into A Square Box
When it’s retracted, the fabric and arms fold into a fully enclosed box about 10 inches high and 7¼ inches deep. The clean lines suit a modern house, and the box keeps the fabric out of the weather.
A torque-sensing motor closes it precisely, and Corradi’s AcquaStop system keeps water from running between the cassette and the wall. It only mounts to a wall.
- 20′ x 13’6″
- Wall Mount Only
- Pitch From 3° To 40°
- Red Dot Design Award
Feng
The One For Evenings
Feng is the rounded version of a full cassette. It has the same torque-sensing motor and AcquaStop detail as the Shan, and it runs from a remote or wall switch.
It’s the only model here that offers LEDs on both the cassette and the arms, which is useful if you plan to sit out after dark. LED arms limit the pitch to 35°.
- 20′ x 11’6″
- Wall Mount Only
- Pitch From 3° To 45°
- Red Dot Design Award
Frame
Tracks Instead Of Arms
Frame is a different kind of awning. The fabric runs on tensioned tracks with gas pistons and a drive belt, so it can sit flat, pitched, or on an existing structure, and it can even shade a skylight.
It’s also the only awning with a rain listing: use waterproof fabric, zippered edges, and enough pitch. An optional front stand supports the outer edge and can cantilever up to 3 feet, though the stand does bring a support back to the deck.
- 16’4″ x 16’4″
- Motorized Only
- Optional Front Stand
- 360° Installation
Corradi also makes the Defense shade sail, a freestanding sail on a stainless steel frame that rotates 360°. It’s a good fit for a pool or an open lawn where there’s no wall to mount to.

A Short Wall Limits How Far Out You Can Go
People often expect to pick any width and any projection, but the arms fold along the wall, so a long projection needs a wide awning. As a rule, the awning has to be wider than its arms are long.
So if you have a 12-foot stretch of wall between two windows, a 13’6″ projection is off the table on any of these models. The table shows Corradi’s minimum widths for a two-arm awning, and Klip and Svet add a third and fourth arm as they get wider.

How High Does A Retractable Awning Need To Mount?
An awning slopes down as it goes out, so the front bar ends up lower than the mounting bracket. On a deck with a low wall or a door right below it, this is what we look at first.
This table shows roughly how many inches the front bar drops below the bracket. At 15°, an 11’6″ arm drops about 3 feet, so a bracket 9 feet above the deck leaves the bar about 6 feet up. Many adults would have to duck.
| Projection | At 10° | At 15° | At 20° |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8’4″ | 17″ | 26″ | 34″ |
| 10′ | 21″ | 31″ | 41″ |
| 11’6″ | 24″ | 36″ | 47″ |
| 13’6″ | 28″ | 42″ | 55″ |
Our own rounded geometry, not a Corradi figure. Corradi also notes that adding pitch reduces how far the awning reaches straight out from the wall. We measure your wall before we recommend a size.
If the wall is short, a roof or soffit mount on a Klip or Svet can gain height. Shan and Feng are wall mount only, so we check them first on a one-story house.
What To Do With An Awning When The Weather Turns In Naperville
The short answer is to bring it in. An awning’s main advantage is that it can get out of the way, so the plan for bad weather is simple.
- SunThis is what awnings are for. Corradi says every Tempotest fabric offers at least 74% solar heat protection, and we set the pitch on the arm models to suit where your sun comes from.
- WindCorradi’s awning brochure doesn’t publish a wind speed. Somfy’s wind sensors can retract a motorized awning automatically, and we’d add one if you’d ever leave it out while you’re away. A crank Klip has nothing to pull it in, so someone has to be home.
- RainOnly the Frame is listed for rain, with waterproof fabric, zippered edges, and enough pitch. Corradi’s brochure lists wind and sun sensors, and its product pages also list a rain sensor, so ask us what’s available for your model. We’d treat an arm awning as something to bring in when the rain starts.
- SnowCorradi doesn’t publish a snow rating for these awnings. Keep it retracted in winter. A cassette or hood gives the stored fabric more protection, which is worth considering with Naperville winters.

Screens can help with low sun that gets in under an awning, if you have a place to mount them. See our exterior screens page.
Open Roll, Semi-Cassette, Or Full Cassette?
This is how much of the awning stays exposed when it’s retracted. A retracted awning spends a lot of the year against your wall, so it’s worth considering how it looks and how well it’s protected.

Open Roll
Klip And Svet
The fabric stays out in the open on its tube. It’s the simplest style, and the only one that reaches 30 feet. You can add a protective hood over the top on both models.

Semi-Cassette
Klip Pod
A rounded case shields the rolled fabric from rain and debris, so you don’t need a separate hood. The arms stay exposed. Width tops out at 17’8″.

Full Cassette
Shan And Feng
Fabric and arms both fold into a closed box, which leaves the cleanest look against the house. The AcquaStop detail helps stop water at the wall. Width tops out at 20 feet.
Dark Or Light Awning Fabric?
Tempotest acrylic is Corradi’s top fabric choice for awnings, in solid colors and stripes. It’s solution-dyed to resist fading, and its Teflon® finish repels water and oil. Sunbrella is available on request.
Darker fabrics usually block more heat and glare. But they also absorb more heat, so Corradi says that if you don’t have much headroom, a lighter fabric can feel cooler when you’re close to it. Lighter fabric also keeps the area under the awning brighter, which can help if the rooms behind it are already dim.
Frame can also use Serge Ferrari Soltis fabrics, including the waterproof Proof 502, W88, and W96 that it needs for rain use.
Frame Colors
Corradi offers nine standard colors, and custom RAL colors are also available. Plastic parts only come in limited colors, and colors look different on a phone or monitor, so please don’t make the final choice from this page.

Motors, Remotes, And Sensors
Corradi uses Somfy® motors across its awning line. It calls the added cost of a motor minimal compared with the whole system, and motorized awnings tend to get used more, since they’re easier to run.
The standard motor cord is 6 feet without a plug, so power is something we plan for at the first visit. If there’s no power nearby and the awning is small, a crank Klip is the alternative.
- Remote RTS handheld in 1, 4, or 16 channels
- Wall Switch Battery-powered DecoFlex with no wiring
- Wind Sensor Eolis or Eolis 3D, which retracts on wind movement
- Sun Sensor Sunis, or Soliris for sun and wind together
- Timer Chronis RTS, with a programmable schedule
- Phone And Voice TaHoma gateway, with Google Assistant and Alexa
- Lights Svet front bar, or Feng cassette and arms
Awning, Retractable Pergola, Or Louvered Roof?
We install all three, so we can tell you when an awning won’t be enough, and when a roof would be more than you need.
| Retractable Awning | Retractable Pergola | Louvered Roof | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posts And Footings | None on arm models. Frame can add a front stand | Depends on the model. Most have posts | Yes, unless built into an existing structure |
| Rain | Sun product. Frame only, with the right setup | Covered, with a waterproof fabric | Waterproof with blades fully closed |
| Snow | Keep it retracted | Corradi can’t guarantee it for specific snow loads | Corradi publishes a maximum payload, which depends on size |
| When Not In Use | Back against the wall, with nothing in the yard | Canopy retracted, frame stays up | Roof stays up, blades open |
| Size Of The Job | Smallest, mostly wall work | Larger, often with posts and drainage | Larger, with posts, drainage, and footings |

Will An Awning Fit Your Wall?
We’ll measure the wall, check the headroom, and show you what would fit. You’ll get an itemized quote, and the consultation is free.
What We Check On Your Wall Before Quoting An Awning
An extended awning puts a lot of leverage on its brackets, so what’s behind the siding matters more than how the wall looks.
-
What’s Behind The Siding
Brackets have to reach solid structure. We find out what’s behind the vinyl, fiber cement, or brick before we quote it.
-
Windows, Doors, And Lights
The bracket line has to clear door trim, window heads, exterior lights, and vents. These often decide the width more than the wall does.
-
The Roof And Soffit
On a low wall, a roof or soffit mount can gain height on a Klip or Svet. We check how that would work with the roofline and the shingles.
-
Power And The Sensor
We plan where the motor gets power, how to hide the cord, and where a wind sensor would pick up the wind it needs to read.
-
Overhead Electric Lines
Naperville’s electric utility has clearance rules around decks, including 3 feet of horizontal clearance from service lines. We check where the line reaches your house.
-
A Deck On The Way
If you’re planning a new deck, tell us about the awning now. We can add deck lighting and plan the wall work with it.
Awning Permits, Historic District Rules, And HOAs In Naperville
A wall-mounted awning is a smaller project than a roof, but it’s still an exterior change. These are the places to check.
- City Building PermitThe City requires permits for decks, patios, open porches, and other secondary structures and improvements. We check with Building Permits, at 400 S Eagle Street, on what applies to your awning before you order.
- Historic DistrictIn the historic district, the City’s Certificate Of Appropriateness table lists new awnings on a primary façade, the front or corner side visible from the street, as needing Historic Preservation Commission review. Rear façades not visible from the street are listed as not requiring review.
- HOA ReviewTall Grass, White Eagle, and Ashbury all want a submittal package before exterior work, and we’ve been through the process with each. Fabric color and pattern are the first things a board sees, so we include them in the package.
- Electrical WorkThe City lists a separate Electrical and Low Voltage permit. If a motor needs a new outlet or circuit, we find out what applies to your project.
How We Install A Retractable Awning
The job itself is short. Most of our work happens before Corradi builds the awning, since it’s made to measure and has to fit the first time.
- Free VisitWe measure the wall, map the windows and doors, and work out mounting height and pitch. We also ask when the sun reaches the space you use.
- Model, Fabric, And ControlsWe narrow the line to what fits, then go through fabric, frame color, hood or cassette, and sensors. You get the quote in writing, itemized line by line.
- Paperwork And PrepWe take care of any permit, historic district, or HOA submittal, along with any power or wall work the awning needs.
- Installation And WalkthroughOur crew mounts the brackets, hangs the awning, and sets the pitch, motor limits, and any sensors. Before we leave, we go over when to bring it in.
What Affects The Cost Of A Retractable Awning In Naperville
Every awning is made to measure, so we don’t publish a price list. These are the things that move the number on your quote.
-
Width And Projection
Both set the base size. Going wider can also mean a third or fourth arm on a Klip or Svet.
-
Housing
Open roll, a hood, a semi-cassette, and a full cassette are different systems at different price levels.
-
Fabric
Most Tempotest fabrics fit the arm models. Sunbrella is by request, and Frame’s waterproof setup needs its own fabric and zippered edges.
-
Controls And Sensors
A crank is only an option on the Klip. Remotes, wind and sun sensors, timers, and phone control add to the base system.
-
LEDs
Lights are available on the Svet front bar and on the Feng cassette and arms. Custom RAL frame colors can also change the price.
-
What The Wall Needs
Blocking, a roof or soffit mount, and new power can all add to the job. We’ll tell you after we look.

Retractable Awning Questions We Hear In Naperville
How Much Does A Retractable Awning Cost In Naperville?
It depends on the model, the width and projection, the fabric, the controls, and what the wall needs. Each awning is made to measure, so we don’t publish a price list. We’ll measure and give you an itemized written quote at no charge.
Can A Retractable Awning Stay Out In The Rain?
Treat the arm models as sun products and bring them in when it rains. Corradi lists rain protection only for the Frame, and that takes waterproof fabric, zippered edges, and enough pitch. If you want to stay outside in the rain, look at a louvered roof or a retractable pergola with waterproof fabric.
What Happens To An Awning In High Wind?
You should retract it. Corradi’s awning brochure doesn’t publish a wind speed. Somfy’s wind sensors can retract a motorized awning automatically, which is worth adding if you’d ever leave it out while you’re away. A crank Klip has to be brought in by hand.
Can I Leave My Awning Out In Winter?
No. Corradi doesn’t publish a snow rating for these awnings, so keep it retracted through the winter. A hood, semi-cassette, or full cassette gives the stored fabric more protection than an open roll.
How Far Out Does A Retractable Awning Reach?
Svet and Shan reach 13’6″. Klip, Klip Pod, and Feng reach 11’6″. Frame goes up to 16’4″, using tracks in place of arms. Your wall width can limit this, since the awning has to be wider than the arms are long.
How Wide Can A Retractable Awning Be?
Klip and Svet go up to 30 feet. Shan and Feng go up to 20 feet, Klip Pod up to 17’8″, and Frame up to 16’4″.
Will I Hit My Head On The Front Bar?
Not if it’s laid out correctly, but on a low wall you do need to plan for it. The bar drops as the awning goes out. At 15°, an 11’6″ arm drops about 3 feet, so a bracket 9 feet above the deck leaves the bar about 6 feet up. We work this out at your house before recommending a size.
Can An Awning Go On A House With Vinyl Siding?
Usually, as long as the brackets can reach solid structure behind it. We check the wall before we quote. On a low wall, a roof or soffit mount on a Klip or Svet may be an option. Shan and Feng are wall mount only.
Does An Awning Need Posts?
Klip, Klip Pod, Svet, Shan, and Feng don’t. They use folding arms and hang from the wall, and some can also hang from the roof or a soffit. Frame can mount to a wall or an existing structure, and it has an optional front stand for support.
Can I Control An Awning From My Phone?
Yes, with Somfy’s TaHoma gateway, which runs on your WiFi and offers schedules through an app. It works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. You can also use a handheld remote, a wireless wall switch, a timer, or sensors.
Do I Need A Permit For An Awning In Naperville?
We check with the City before you order, since it depends on the project. In the historic district, new awnings on a street-facing façade are listed as needing Historic Preservation Commission review. If your HOA has an architectural review, we prepare that package too.
What Warranty Comes With A Corradi Awning?
Corradi’s awning brochure lists a five-year product warranty on each model. We’ll give you the details for your system with your quote.
